Why did we do it?
The Digital Timeline was a concept that came up when we were looking for various statistics about mobile browsing versus desktop browsing. We were looking for ways to show our clients how mobile browsing was not just increasing, but how the internet in general has been changing. We couldn't find one resource that painted a technical and cultural picture of the online world at any one moment, so we decided to build one instead.
What does it do?
We collate content from a number of different sources, so that we can try to be as accurate as possible with the data we are presenting. So we use sources from all over the internet and combine these to put together our figures for the year.
The Digital Timeline combines cultural stories and facts, such as major news stories from the year and the highest grossing film and music, with stats about browser usage, number of smartphone units and mobile share of browsing. It makes for a compelling look back at the online world since 2003.
